Which exercises should you implement in your training program to increase the level of your game?

Ever wondered what makes the best soccer players dominate the league until they retire of age? Well, the answer is very simple; they know precisely what to do to improve their performance all year long. Basically, to be a good player, you need to perfect your control and dribbling, speed, agility, power and the ability to make and implement quick decisions. The following are simple exercises you can undertake to improve most of these areas.

Ball skills

This is probably the most important aspect that you should seek to improve. Some of the activities you can do to perfect your skills include:

  • Juggling- involves tapping the ball up with your feet repeatedly while exchanging the legs in quick successions, all the while maintaining the ball airborne.
  • Handling the ball with your head, knees, chest and trying to perfect on how you can use them to direct the ball. All these are needed in the field.
  • Doing inside and outside circles while freestyle-dribbling the ball and controlling it in a restricted or small area.


Remember that if you do not have sufficient energy, you cannot perform well. You need to work on your body stamina, balance and for obvious reasons, the foot power. You might think that you only need to empower your lower body but to balance; arm strength is needed as well.  This is true especially for female soccer players as it aids in the depletion of cellulite, which in turn improves strength.  Some of the best daily exercises that can help you include:

  • Lunges and squats- do these forms of workout to give your feet and thighs the power to be able to run and kick the ball incredibly, leaving the fans chanting in admiration and disbelief. Daily jogs also get the job done.
  • Pushups and planks- these improve your core, arms, and shoulders. You can also lift weights at home or hit the gym on a regular basis.

If you do 30 pushups on a certain day, make sure to hit more than that the following day. This way you will keep improving.

Speed and agility

These 2 create a lot of difference in defining who you are as a soccer player. To enhance your agility, you need the cone drill practice. You can use either cones or what you readily have at home. Space them approximately 2 feet apart and dribble your ball as fast as you can while weaving in and out of your cones from end to end. The ladder drill and skipping rope can also improve your speed and agility.
